Project #2: Mass wasting, Earthquake, Volcano, or Tsunami case study
Global Natural Hazards Fall 2022
Total points: 25
In this project, you will create a 1-page fact sheet on a natural disaster event caused by either a mass wasting event, or an earthquake, volcano or tsunami. Similar to Project #1, you fill get to choose any historical event that you want.
What is different for Project 2 compared to Project 1?
1. The hazard must have been created by an earthquake, volcano, tsunami, or a mass wasting event. (It is ok if it involved more than one of these hazards).
2. The hazard must have caused a natural disaster.
3. Instead of making a slide presentation, you will make a 1-page fact sheet.
Important: For the 1-page fact sheet: use the template on the next page.
Grading Rubric:
Header (5 points)
Body (10 points)
References (5 points)
Professionalism (5 points)
– Turn in the assignment on time
– No more than 2 typos
– Clean formatting

Technical Details for the Fact Sheet
– Font type: Arial (default) or Times New Roman (if you insist)
– Turned in as a pdf
– Fontsize of 11 (default) or 10 (if you need the extra space).
– Maximum length: 1 page (including all parts)
Project #2, Global Natural Hazards Fall 2022. Created by: replace this text with you name
Event Location: replace this text
Event Date(s): replace this text
Hazard Type(s): replace this text
On the right-side of the header, insert one small image of your choice related to the event
—– BODY —–
1. Was the event predicted (If so by whom? How accurately was it predicted?)
2. Was there any preparation for the event (Any evacuation plans, or strategy to mitigate the event’s impacts)
3. How did the event create a disaster (Provide a timeline for the disaster/sequence of events)
4. What was the role of exposure (based on the in-class definition of that terms)
5. What was the role of vulnerability (based on the in-class definition of that terms)
6. Was the hazard event extreme? i.e., was the hazard a rarely occurring event. (What was the probability of occurrence? If applicable)
7. What is one physical principal from the course lectures that helps to explain the behavior of the hazard for the natural disaster.
8. Add two additional unique facts about the event. Make sure you find these on your own.

Add two more pages to the document title file-49175… source to be used.
PLEASE ADD AN ABSTRACT AND ADD FIGURES..
I. ABSTRACT
Write this last (!), using the following formula:
• First sentence, paraphrase from your Introduction section and combine “where” and “who”
• Next sentence, paraphrase from your Introduction and Background sections the “what” (maybe give an example)
• Next sentence, strongly state your “why” from the Intro and Topic sections, again, paraphrased. If you need to do this in two sentences instead of just one, that would be OK.
• In the next 1-2 sentences, restate from the major lines of evidence supporting your topic.
• Conclude in one sentence (paraphrased from your Conclusions section) what you think should be done in the future.
Your abstract cannot be more than one page, and should be in the ½ to ¾ of a page range.
As an important test, have someone read your abstract out loud to you and see if it captures everything you want to say, and is well written.
Term Paper
SUMMARY: To enhance and evaluate your critical thinking as it relates to the impact of natural disasters on humans, you will create a term paper evaluating hazard risks and mitigation for a location outside of the United States.
REQUIREMENTS: You will select one (1) region located outside of the United States. I say “region” because you should select an area that is bigger than just one city, but won’t be as big as a large country. So, you could either pick a small country or pick a region of a larger country that encompasses more than one city. For that region, you will identify a hazard risk assessment plan and using critical thinking assess the quality of the plan and associated hazard mitigation. Also, the region selected should be at risk by at least four of the major hazards we cover in class (tornados, hurricanes/typhoons, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes).
1. Describe the region you will assess for your term paper using the criteria described in the assignment. One well-written paragraph.
Answer: Jamaica, the third-largest island in the West Indies, is an island nation south of Cuba. The island maximum width is 82 km and as long as 234 km from east to west. The nation’s total area is 10,991 square kilometers. The capital and largest city of Jamaica is Kingston, which also has a large commercial seaport. **NOTE, “Need to list the 4 (or more) types of natural disaster for which the proposed region is at risk in the answer above”
2. Link for the hazard assessment plan you will use for the term paper.

The paper is about (Alllanite) mineral. I attached the writing & formatting guideline for it. There’s also an example how it should look like. Please use figures (very important) it should be listed after the 8 pages. Include all the academic sources at the end of the paper. An outline is required for my term paper, therefore, please create an appropriate outline as you see fit for the ALLANITE mineral.

The topic will be in: “How is Geology Related To Me” (Why and how is geology relevant to you as an individual). The way on how you should choose a topic will be discussed at length on the first lecture. The paper must be at least 3 pages long (not including list of sources) and no more than 5 pages, double space, and citing academic sources (internet sources are valid). The paper should be emailed to me on either pdf or doc format. In order to get a full grade, make sure that you narrow down your topic inasmuch as you can (it is easy to write and to research if your topic is concise).
For example, volcanoes would be a huge topic, but types of magmas in a volcano would be a great thesis to work on.
