In your reading this week, Richard Thompson Ford talks about the usefulness of queer theory to reading all kinds of “foreign and exotic social contexts” (Finding Out). Based on his description of what “queer theory” is about, how would you bring his kind of analysis to Hartman’s portrait of Mabel Howard? Or to one of the short German films we watched?
Essay Prompt
In 500-750 words, write a formal, short essay that explain how the tools of queer theory approach (as outlined by Ford) are relevant to Hartman’s text, and to ONE of the German film excerpts we watched.
You will need to read the Ford text carefully to even begin this assignment (Finding Out). There you will find him articulate several “tools” theory gives us. Focus on one of those (or two interrelated ones) to analyze what is “queer” about the Hartman text and ONE of the films.
Your thesis statement here will be very important: it should be specific about which tool you are using to look at Hartman and the film. In addition, you must include at least one quotation from the Ford reading from (Lesson 3) and from your chosen text (Hartman or one of the films).
