Main Design Brief: Beginning this week, you will lay down your specific project, concept proposal, and company mission statement. In this assignment, you will have identified your potential organization and what it significantly offers, located at a common site where and building typology. Visit the given website to choose a specific company associated to Children’s Book, Cookbook, Art, Architecture. You will choose one genre from this four selection. The company must be located outside of the US (UK, Canada, India, Japan, etc.) which will have a regional office in Chicago.
In Week 1 and earlier readings under Weeks 1&2, the instructor has identified an initial overview for you. We have defined the specific functional spaces needed in the given commercial space environment are partially indicated below. A design brief will be distributed once specific clients have been determined. You can source your initial dimensions from the digital book.
Secured entry vestibule/foyer leading to the main lobby/Cloakroom
Main Lobby for 10-12 people
Gallery / Media Room for special guests Executive offices (4 enclosed offices)
Regular offices (6-8 enclosed offices)
Shared enclosed spaces for 6-8 people (Marketing, accounts, design, etc.). Note: Open workstations are highly useful.
Collaborative space for 8-10 people (open area with the option to enclose)
Creative Room (Illustrators, copywriters, web designers, etc.)
Photography Room
Media Production Room (Audio, Film and Print)
Conference room for 12-14 people Break room (with kitchenette, wellness, lockers, etc.)
ADA Restrooms (male and female) Document or Storage room
Archive Room Other essential spaces based on selected option decided by you.
Review the selected client and essential spaces in the above list. The project contains office areas organized within the given space The typical types of areas can include areas for executive, accounts, marketing and creative offices, meeting spaces, and information technology office among many other functional areas that you may need. You are free to determine other areas suitable to your proposed organization or client.
In order to understand completely the requirements and conditions for your commercial space, you have to complete a more detailed site analysis on the project location. See example of a basic site analysis in various useful formats (distance to public transport, airport, points of interest, amenities, etc.). You will communicate your basic thoughts regarding the design concept for the commercial office areas, which will assist you in working toward a cohesive design. To have a strong understanding of the initial project proposal and anticipated users, you will research and finalize a project statement, prepare an initial criteria matrix of user needs and requirements, and propose an organizational hierarchy. Create digital presentation boards for the concept include one page of inspirational images, such as art, nature, and objects (no Pinterest or Houzz should be used). Add multiple sketches and other essential research. Ex. What are the needs in a Wellness Facility?
Assignment to be completed:
With the Reedsy information search and selected Chicago site supporting your design option in Week 1, use the selected organization and company logo, mission statement and purpose. Information can be sourced from the company site. Support this with a project statement, client profile and goals. Add four goals using four essential keywords (must be related to sustainability, inclusivity or culture, wellness, community of learners) or any fifth goal that can be of value to develop your visualization process. This can be theory-based or concept-based, etc. With the given footprint of the building of First Western Properties, use the measured information in the provided PDF file of building plan and old site, get familiar with the space size and character of the area. Perform a google site analysis of your client’s location. You are free to use Internet resources to find other information and additional photographs of the designated building or location. Prepare an initial Adjacency and Criteria Matrix that includes room names, adjacencies, acoustical requirements, user needs, and special considerations. The criteria matrix needs to show how all of the separate workplace areas are arranged in terms of adjacency and workplace flow and circulation. (Click here to see a criteria matrix example). (**This is optional for the week but you can start mapping it out). See screenshot example provided by faculty.
With items from the above 1 to 4; create the formatted 11 x 17 sheet to communicate your ideation process. You may use the software of your choice (such as Adobe CC or Microsoft). Each presentation slide needs to include the best way to manifest your visualization – use sketches and images. Combine all the requirements of Part 2 in one binder.
Your organization name and logo can be in the presentation cover sheet The contents and images should be laid out in a pleasing composition, paying particular attention to balance, spacing, alignment, and margins. See provided format in week 1.
