In 2008 Microsoft acquired aQuantive (a publicly traded company) for $6.5 billion dollars. The primary target of the acquisition was Atlas, the division that delivered over 45% of all internet advertising and gathering over 30 terabytes of data hourly for advertising agency and client use on key consumer activity surrounding advertising viewing and purchasing behavior. The Atlas division (350 staff based in Pioneer Square in Seattle) was assimilated into Microsoft Advertising (based in Redmond, about 17 miles away across Lake Washington). For the first year all personnel were left in place. In early 2010 the decision was made to move nearly all of these 350 employees to the Redmond offices of Microsoft Advertising. This major shift would dramatically impact over 70% of these employees who would now have much longer commutes to Redmond. Commute times during rush hours could be up to 1 hour at times. Employees impacted will be moving into multiple departments within Microsoft Advertising and include programmers, the training group, operations staff and general administration. You should explore, discuss, and strategize about how to understand this organizational change, how to manage a change process, and the conditions that must be addressed if the change process is to move forward successfully. Management is looking for your advice since similar situations have not gone well and have results in low morale and loss of staff. This organization has a history of not being successful with organizational change initiatives. All efforts previously have been disorganized and not clearly communicated across the organization which has set the change process up for failure before it really begins. Senior leaders and managers have had a difficult time moving in a clear direction because each leader and manager has their strong opinions on how change should be introduced and pushed through the organization. The tension and stress among the senior leadership team is palpable. Even though many change ideas have been good, the process has consistently been flawed leaving most employees with a negative bias toward any change introduced by the leadership and management team. This paper should be a clear summary of the week 3.5 reading in Kouzes and Posner as well as from the week 3.5 HBR articles (Turnitin SI cannot exceed 15%) that the student believes can help the leaders and managers navigate their internal issues of resistance and implement change successfully.
