Binge eating disorder is a type of eating disorder that is severe and life-threatening (NEDA, 2018). Binge eating is the most common eating disorder in the US and is treatable. It is characterized by episodes of compulsive eating, loss of control during the binge, shame, and distress or guilt. There are also episodes of recurrent eating large amounts of food. While this disease may seem similar to bulimia in binge eating it does not include episodes of purging. Signs and symptoms include extreme concern with body weight and shape, frequent diets, food rituals, fear of eating in public, and stealing and hoarding food in strange places (NEDA, 2018). These symptoms are emotional and behavioral but there are physical symptoms as well. Some examples are fluctuations in weight either up or down and noticable. There can be episodes of stomach cramps, constipation, acid reflux, and difficulty concentrating. Treament for this patient would be more foucsed on the behavior rather than the nutrion aspect. Specifically it would consist of cogntive behavioral therapy. This includes working on decreasing the frequency of the binges (StatPearls, 2022). As well as working on weight loss and ensuring it is done in a healthy way. For this patient total parenteral and enteral nutrition is not recommended. This would only cause them to have an increase in weight and would not be treating the actual binges
