What is the goal of medicine? It is to help a person live a longer, better life? Is it to prevent suffering, even if that means helping to die? Or is the goal of medicine more Kantian–to help a person reach her vision of the good life, whatever her vision entails, thus honoring her autonomy? Whether physician-assisted suicide is morally permissible depends on our conceptions of medicine itself and our beliefs about the scope of the physician’s professional obligations.
Second, even if we think physician-assisted suicide is morally permissible, we must remember that only mentally competent individuals can receive it in states where it is legal. Some individuals, including minors and people living with dementia, then, are not even eligible.
